Flt3-Ligand is a growth factor responsible for regulating the proliferation of early hematopoietic cells. It binds to cells expressing the Flt3 tyrosine kinase receptor. Interestingly, Flt3-Ligand itself doesn't directly stimulate the proliferation of early hematopoietic cells. Instead, it works synergistically with other colony-stimulating factors (CSFs) and interleukins to induce growth and differentiation. Unlike SCF, Flt3-Ligand doesn't affect mast cells.
Various isoforms of Flt3-Ligand have been identified, with the predominant biologically active form being anchored to the cell surface as part of a transmembrane protein (209 amino acids). This membrane-bound isoform can undergo proteolytic cleavage, producing a biologically active soluble isoform.
Recombinant Human Flt3-Ligand is a soluble protein weighing 17.6 kDa and composed of 155 amino acid residues.
