Leukemia Inhibitory Factor (LIF) is a ~20 kDa cytokine in the IL-6 family. It signals through the LIF receptor and gp130. LIF is found in tissues such as the lungs, thymus, and nervous system and can increase during inflammation or tissue injury. It has many biological effects, but is best known for supporting stem cell self-renewal and preventing embryonic stem cell differentiation, particularly in mice. Human and mouse LIF are about 79% similar and can show cross-species activity.
